Sentences are made up of different kinds of words, and it makes it easier to refer to them if we give them names depending on what they do. Many of us may have been taught at school that words are divided into groups known as parts of speech. That is an incomplete description and is no longer much used. Linguists speak instead of word classes. These can be listed as nouns, lexical verbs, adjectives and adverbs, on the one hand, and determiners, pronouns, auxiliary verbs, adverbial particles, prepositions and coordinating and subordinatingconjunctions on the other. Those in the first group are called lexical words. They carry the meaning of a sentence. Those in the second group are called function words and, among other things, they help relate one lexical word to another. Function words are members of a closed class of words, that…

Weekly Photo Challenge– Layers

TALES FROM THE MOTHERLAND

It was hours and miles to travel– layers of time and history.

It was layers of distance up: first by plane, then by car, and finally on foot– Layers of air, up in altitude, that made our muscles ache and lungs burn… step by step.

It was step after step, over three days and through three climates. Up past the mighty Salkantay: brilliant blue skies, the shocking white of the Andes, and our bodies working almost to the breaking point. Bringing tears of joy to my eyes. Layer after layer of emotion.

Layers of physical pain. Layers of culture and landscape. Layers of experience upon experience.  Moments of beauty that took our breath away.

Layers and more layers… Ending in total awe. Behold!

Check out: the Weekly Photo Challenge here.  Read more about our trip to Peru: here (Trekking), here (Trekking), here (Trekking), here (Machu the Inca dog), and

shore of us seems… almost

smoke by me the expectations a pack at day,
the searches,
the discoveries is delayed in smoke
week has increasingly fewer days
increasingly more nights
the seasons pass from morning till night
the future comes back to flawless polishing… vices and virtues

the place widens because they I tend to do consumer economy
for every millimeter of clay
My persistence whet me to always pass thresholds, nicknamed gorgeous horizons
and how, if I’m still here? Or there around …all the same
Gillette ax, the luxurious cream, get up my hair at unique true ascension
the victories it count them on the fingers, under fingernails
with which I clung to life as of a shore …It was the exact time. It will be the exact time? No. Always has …been.

the death of her

Work in Progress...

he had her at hello, she thought, when he greeted her at her door.
handsome, tall with dark brooding eyes, she hoped she was not done for.
he’s the kind who would make her forget about her honor and chastity.
make her believe he could forgive her weakness and not judge her wicked deed.
he told her to stand near him as he prepared her a dining feast.
his body and hands glided so effortlessly, that he unknowingly released
a beast that grew and grew inside of her, that had an insatiable thirst.
a thirst that consumed the very soul of her. she was truly cursed.
“why can’t i have a different taste, one of his warm, sweet flesh?
just a quick nibble is all it’d be, my urges won’t be suppressed.”
she pushed those thoughts out of her mind, but every time he came near,
this mounting, succulent ache…

Community Christmas Chorus

The Recovering Legalist

A New Thing

Every once in a blue-moon-while I try something new, something out of my comfort zone. So, when I was asked if I’d like to sing with a barber shop-style men’s chorus, I had apprehensions. I mean, was it time to do something new? Did I need to wait until the next blue moon?

You see, our new choir director, Chuck Wilson, sings with the venerable Choo Choo Chorus. He had been inviting me to come join a community chorus for Christmas, but I didn’t know if I would really be up to it, or if I would like it. I was wrong on both accounts.

Singing acapella with a bunch of other talented men has given me the opportunity to ride on their coattails. The opportunity to sit under the instruction of such an experienced music director, Paul Blazeck, makes me smile as much as I…
